I was happy that I found my love. It didn't matter that we were both male, not at all. We loved each other enough to deal with the name calling and the lies. After all, we know what has happened between us, not them.
I noticed Jesse at the end of the hallway, his bright blonde hair sticking out from the crowd of dark haired students. With a large grin, I started over to him. Another student roughly bumped his shoulder into me.
"Fag." He mumbled harshly under his breath.
I tossed him a sneer over my shoulder then stepped up to Jesse. I wrapped my arm around his and laced our fingers together. I rested my head onto his shoulder. "Good morning handsome."
He looked down at me through his black rimmed glasses, flashing me a grin that just made me melt. "Good morning Eric."
I returned his grin with a wide smile of my own and lightly squeezed his hand. I tugged on my uniform tie; it felt especially tight that day. I think it was the fact that we were getting more stares then usual on that day.
Snickers, smirks, and sneers alike graced the faces of our fellow students that were looking at us. A wave of relief washed over me as I saw our best friend run up to us.
"Hey there guys!" chimed Amy. Her friendly smile and non-judgmental attitude towards the relationship between Jesse and I was a rare attribute inside this school. The vast majority of the student-body was very homophobic. This is something that terrified me a bit.
What would happen if one student finally takes "action" and hurts one or both of us? I clenched my hand tighter around his just at the thought.
Jesse held me closer as we started to pass the especially cruel group to us in the school. They gave off a violent air and had rough, angry exteriors. Jagged sneers stretched across each of their faces as we passed them by one by one.
They stepped out in front of us and cornered us against the lockers, Amy still glued to our side.
"What's up with you queers? You act all high and mighty, like this is normal." One member of the group said.
Jesse pushed me behind him, between his body and the wall of lockers. "To us, this is normal."
"So it's okay to like dicks!?"
He gave the other a sharp nod. The other's sneer grew and he grabbed him by his collar, pulling him away from me.
"You're fucking messing with me, aren't you!?" he screamed, spittle flying from his lips and specking his glasses.
A sly smirk graced Jesse's face, confirming that he was indeed messing with him. The other's face twisted in disgust and anger.
"Chris, leave them alone!" Amy yelled at the guy.
"Shut up bitch! This doesn't concern you!"
She quietly stepped back with an obvious look of fear upon her face. I gritted my teeth, helpless to the situation at hand.
"What are you getting at Jesse? What's your deal?" he asked.
"What are you talking about?" he answered calmly.
Chris pulled his fist back and landed a solid punch in the middle of Jesse's face. A crack resonated through the hallway. His glasses fell to the floor, them now in two pieces and the left lens severely cracked, and you could see blood running from between his eyes and down his face. He continued to stare at Chris with a blank expression. I ground my teeth more as he pulled his fist back again.
"No!" I screamed and tackled him to the floor. "Don't. You. Dare. Touch. Him!" Between each word, I threw a hard punch at the side of his face.
One thing that slowly floated into my mind as I continued to beat him was where the hell were the teachers?
His face started to swell and I heard the others in his group yelling to get me off. The ring I wore on my right hand created a deep gash in his cheek. Blood stained my knuckles crimson and it splattered against my face as I pulled back my fist.
Someone finally grabbed me around the shoulders and pulled me off of him. I struggled against their hold, still in a blind rage, but they hugged me close to their chest. I soon realized that the one holding me was Jesse and all the fight drained out of me.
I started to tremble, turning around and burying my face into his chest. I felt his chest rise and fall as he said something to the others. I was only able to place two words: Get out.
"Are you sure you're alright?" I asked Jesse the following day. I felt bad for causing him to have to get a silly looking bandage on the bridge of his nose.
"Yeah, I'm fine. But what about you? You're suspended for the rest of the week. That just puts you behind in your classes." He told me this as I walked him to school.
"Please," I replied. "I'm not worried about it. After all, Chris is suspended too and I did quite a job to his pretty little face." I finished with a smirk.
He gave me a lighthearted laugh. "Yeah, you sure did." He grinned.
"Okay, I got to go." I told him as I saw the entrance to the school. I stood on my toes and gave him a quick peck on the lips. His smile widened. "I'll see you later."
I had gone back home and went to sleep after I left Jesse at the school entrance. I yawned and stretched as I saw it was time to pick him back up from the building.
He smiled widely at me, meeting me at the corner of the street. I grasped his hand tightly as we started back to the apartment we shared.
We noticed that there was a black sports car that was never parked at the street's edge before. Once we passed it, the car slowly crept behind us, trailing us.
Jesse gripped my hand tighter. "We're clearly being followed." He mumbled quietly to me. "We got to lose him."
Without warning, he jerked me into a nearby alley that opened up into another street. The tires of the mysterious car screeched as it sped away to try and cut us off. We took off down the sidewalk as the car reappeared far down the street.
He was dragging me forward by my wrist and I could tell that it would be sore later.
"Shit!" Jesse cursed loudly as we hit a dead end. He clutched my wrist tighter as we heard the tires to the unknown car screech again and footsteps echoing down the alley. I dared not turn around as the guy started to speak.
"Hello Jesse and Eric." The words dripped with venom and the voice was horribly familiar.
I took a shaky breath, still not daring to turn around yet. "Why're you here Chris?" I asked with the tremor in my body apparent in my voice.
"Don't you see? I want revenge." He answered.
My spine went rigid as I heard a distinguishable metallic click. I gulped and very slowly turned around to face him. I hadn't seen Chris's face since he was battered and bloody by my hands. Now, I saw how much damage I'd really done.
His short, spiked, black hair was partially covered by a bandage that wrapped over his left eye. He must have needed stitches or else he wouldn't have the bandage. Pure hatred and fury burned behind his dark brown eyes.
Chris was holding a pistol at arm's length, aiming the barrel directly at my chest. My heart was pounding loudly in my ears. "R-Revenge? The cut on your cheek will heal in time." I told him in a quiet voice.
"Yes, I want revenge on that, but there's so much more to that. I also want to get rid of you two
"Get rid o-of us?"
"Kill you! Murder you! Whatever other things you can think of! You two disgust me! Loving another man is unnatural! It's sick and disturbing!" His eye twitched slightly, hinting at his growing madness and hysteria.
"But we're still humans!"
"Lies!" Chris took several steps forward. "You're vermin; you're worse than dogs in my eyes! Unfit for living!"
He was standing a little more than arm's length from me now. I stole a sideways glance at Jesse. He was standing, stone-faced, his jaw clenched in anger. His hands were relaxed but I saw a finger twitch. He was trying to fake that he wasn't angry or scared.
I was surprised as I was jerked forward, Chris's hand clenching the collar of my shirt in a tight fist and he stuck the barrel of the gun under my chin. "What? Thinking of doing nasty things with your boyfriend you sick bastard!?"
"No! N-No I wasn't!"
"You're lying you damn" He growled and struck me hard in the side of my face with the butt of his pistol. My cheek was already swelling as he moved backwards, taking his previous position.
"You don't think I can pull the trigger, do you!?" Chris cried suddenly, the insane look growing clearly in his eye that wasn't covered by the gauze.
"No actually." I started a bit cautiously. "I mean, I don't think a high-school student is capable of murder."
Once I said that, I started to regret it. He moved his straight arm until it was perpendicular to the sky. He squeezed the trigger. I watched as the muzzle lit up with fire and a bit of smoke. I flinched as the thunderous bang echoed inside the alleyway.
"Now what do you think!?"
"I-I think you can
" I gulped loudly as the pistol was soon aimed back at me. We pretty much stared each other down for a minute or two until we heard the police sirens. Someone must have heard the gunshot then called it into the police office. I was saved! I fought the urge to grin as his eye flickered to the side.
My hopes started to dwindle as he didn't look nervous or frightened.
I dared myself to speak as the sirens started to grow closer. "Aren't you afraid of the cops?"
The nastiest, most evil smirk I have ever seen stretched his lips. "No, I am not afraid." The police cars with their flashing lights just pulled up to the alley opening, several policemen exiting the vehicles. "I was just waiting for an audience."
The trigger was then pulled, erupting in fire and thunder. The bitter smell of gunpowder filled the air; my chest felt as if it was being ripped open. I clutched the wound on the side of my chest as I fell backwards. I crumpled into a bleeding pile on the grimy alley floor.
"Eric!" I heard Jesse finally speak. I turned my head with some effort as I saw Chris being arrested by two men in uniforms. Two more men in all white came rushing up to me at the same time as Jesse.
I swallowed hard and broke out into a sweat. Jesse knelt down on my one side as the men in white knelt on the opposite. He sat me up slowly, myself clutching his shirt in an iron grip, and I cried out in pain.
Jesse was pale as the white-dressed men pried my hand from the wound. The one with the dark hair looked up at Jesse. "We're sorry
He's not going to make it, no matter what we do."
He held me closer to his chest. I winced and tightened my grip. "N-No
" He started shakily. "I can't lose him, I can't!"
"We're really sorry." The lighter haired man piped up. "You have our condolences." At least they sounded like they truly meant that.
" I had never heard him sound so pathetic. "I don't want to lose you Eric
I swallowed hard again and shakily took off the ring I wore. I grabbed his hand, slid the ring onto his finger, and held onto it tight.
At that point, a clap of thunder sounded overhead. I looked deeply into Jesse's eyes. "Don't forget: I love you." I told him weakly.
I cupped his face and mustered the last bit of my strength to lean up and give him a light kiss.
After the kiss, Eric relaxed in Jesse's arms and passed away. Rain slowly started to fall and a single raindrop fell from the sky onto Eric's face by the corner of his eye. It rolled down his cheek, looking exactly as a tear would.
Seeing that just broke Jesse down. He began to sob into his no-longer-moving chest, clinging to the lifeless body. He soon released the body to the men in white and watched sadly as they loaded his motionless body into the ambulance.
